Personhood. Understanding Beyond Benchmarks.

Overview

Personhood, Not Consumerhood. Series: 24th August 2026.

What can we learn from empathy? How audience understanding can move beyond observable behaviour towards the person experiencing the brand. For CMOs, Brand Managers and Senior Marketing Managers, a richer way to interpret research, question assumptions and understand perception, intention, emotion and meaning. The result is a more informed perspective on audience insight, brand strategy, customer experience and the decisions that shape how organisations engage the people they serve.

Start With The Person.

What does the Brand understand about the human person behind segmentation analysis?

Behavioural evidence can reveal purchases, preferences, browsing activity, responses and stated needs. These signals become strategically valuable when leaders consider the human experience surrounding them.  A customer is a person experiencing circumstances, making judgements, interpreting information and assigning meaning to what they encounter. â€‹This gives a basis for deciding what research deserves attention and what customer knowledge should influence brand and marketing decisions.

Ask What the Behaviours Mean

If research shows that customers value convenience, the next leadership question becomes:

What does convenience mean in their lived experience?  It may involve saving time, reducing mental effort, gaining confidence, feeling greater control or simplifying a complex decision.

This may change the strategic interpretation of the research. Introducing a simple discipline into research reviews: identifying the observed behaviour, identifying the stated reason and then investigating the human experience that gives both their meaning.

Turn Research into Questions

Research becomes more valuable when leadership teams ask stronger questions of the information already available. A survey can establish what an audience reports. Interviews can reveal how people describe their experience. Behavioural data can demonstrate what people actually do. The senior marketing task is to bring these sources together and ask what they collectively reveal about the person. Before commissioning another research project, leaders can review existing evidence and identify the questions that remain unanswered. This can produce more productive research briefs and give existing customer knowledge greater strategic value.

Examine the Experience

Customer experience deserves attention as a human experience, with perception playing a central role in how people interpret an Brand and its brand. Two people can encounter the same proposition and experience it differently because their circumstances, expectations, prior knowledge and intentions differ.

Marketing leaders can bring this perspective into customer journey reviews by asking what the person is likely to perceive, expect, feel and interpret at significant moments. This can reveal opportunities across proposition design, communications, service experience and brand expression while giving teams a more considered basis for prioritising customer experience improvements.

Working Together on Project

Challenge Consumer Language

Language shapes managerial thinking. When audiences are described exclusively as consumers, attention can move towards transactions, conversion and purchasing behaviour. Personhood introduces a broader field of consideration, where the audience remains a human being with circumstances, intentions, preferences and personal meaning.

For marketing leaders, this does not diminish commercial objectives. It can strengthen them by encouraging a fuller understanding of the people whose decisions ultimately determine market performance. Leaders can therefore review strategic briefs, research questions and customer journey documents for the assumptions embedded in their terminology and consider whether the language reflects the audience they seek to understand.

Make Empathy Strategic

Edith Stein's contribution becomes particularly useful when empathy is treated as a serious method of understanding another person's experience. For marketing leaders, this means giving attention to how an audience experiences an Brand from its own perspective. Introduce an audience experience question into strategic reviews: What is this experience like for the person receiving it?

This question can sit alongside commercial measures, research findings and brand objectives. It gives leadership teams another perspective for evaluating propositions, campaigns and customer experiences, particularly when decisions involve complex choices or significant moments in the customer relationship.

Lead With Better Understanding

The strongest practical lesson for senior marketing leaders is simple: better customer knowledge begins with better questions about the person behind the evidence. CMOs can encourage this through research governance, strategic reviews and brand planning. Brand Managers can apply it when interpreting audience insight and developing propositions. Senior Marketing Managers can bring it into campaign planning and customer experience decisions.

The principle provides a useful leadership test: before acting on what the audience has done, ask what the evidence reveals about the person, their experience and the meaning they assign to the encounter. That additional enquiry can strengthen the quality of strategic marketing decisions.

Closing Reflective Perspectives

The Person Beyond The Category

The movement from consumerhood to Personhood begins with a fundamental proposition: The human person cannot be adequately understood through the category assigned to their behaviour. A market segment, customer profile or behavioural record can describe aspects of a person's activity, yet the person remains the source from which those activities arise. Personhood therefore introduces a richer object of attention. It recognises the individual as a conscious subject who perceives, interprets, chooses and gives meaning to experience. For marketing, this elevates customer understanding from classification towards an account of the human being encountered.

Understanding Through Experience

Human understanding develops through encounter. Behaviour provides evidence, language provides expression and experience provides access to meaning. Empathy becomes significant because it permits another person's experience to become intelligible while preserving the distinction between one's own experience and theirs. This offers marketing a mature conception of insight.

Research can tell us what people report and behavioural evidence can show what people do. Human understanding asks what these expressions reveal about the person experiencing the situation. The movement from evidence towards meaning becomes central to genuinely informed customer understanding.

Mystery of the Person

Human personhood possesses a dimension that remains open to discovery. A person can be observed, interviewed, measured and described, yet their interior life continues to exceed the information gathered about them. This is the philosophical meaning of mystery: a reality in which the observer participates and which therefore cannot be completely placed outside the act of understanding.

Such mystery gives knowledge a more appropriate object. Human understanding becomes an ongoing act of discovery because the person is more than the sum of observable characteristics.

The Reality Within Experience

Personhood also introduces an important philosophical premise: reality exceeds the categories through which it is described. A customer profile represents a constructed view of a person. The living person precedes the profile. This distinction matters because marketing decisions are frequently made through representations of human beings.

Segments, personas, datasets and research findings become useful intellectual instruments, yet their value depends upon their relationship to the people they represent. A responsible marketing intelligence therefore keeps the human reality within view, allowing evidence to inform understanding while preserving personal depth.

Fidelity to Human Experience

Creative fidelity provides a practical principle for marketing thought. It asks whether an interpretation remains faithful to the human reality encountered through research and experience. This requires intellectual receptivity to what people reveal through their words, behaviour, emotions, circumstances and choices.

A research finding becomes more valuable when it remains connected to the person from whom the finding originates. Insight therefore gains depth when evidence is interpreted as an expression of lived human experience. The marketer becomes an interpreter of human reality, with responsibility for preserving the person within the knowledge produced about them.

 Personhood.
Marketing Intelligence.

The proposition of Personhood, Not Consumerhood ultimately concerns the quality of marketing knowledge itself. Consumerhood offers a useful commercial category. Personhood offers an account of the human reality within that category. The distinction invites marketing thought to ask a more fundamental question:

What kind of knowledge is required when the subject of understanding is the human person?

The answer begins with evidence and extends towards experience, meaning and human significance. Marketing becomes more intelligent when its representations remain faithful to the people they represent, because commercial judgement becomes stronger when human reality remains present within strategic understanding.
